 Republic Day  2022: Why is it celebrated? 

India is celebrating its 73rd Republic Day. On this occasion, I am going to tell some important facts related to this day which you all need to know:


Republic Day is the national festival

of India. On this day 26 January 1950,

the Constitution of India came into

force and the Government of India Act (1935)was replaced as the governing

document of India and thus, India

became a republic.

The Constitution of India was adopted

by the Constituent Assembly of India on

26 November 1949. but it came into

force on 26 January 1950 with

a democratic government system,

making India an independent republic.

Who drafted the Indian Constitution?

On 29 August 1947, the Constituent Assembly set up a Drafting Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to prepare a Draft Constitution for India.

The Drafting Committee consists of seven members - Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, N Gopalaswamy; BR Ambedkar, KM Munshi, Shri Sadulla, B.L. Mittar, and D.P. Khaitan. 


The Indian Constitution was prepared in a total of 2 years 11 months 18 days. It was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949. But it came into force on 26 January 1950. Thus India was established as a republic nation. 

Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President of India.

Why 26 January was chosen as Republic Day?

26 January was chosen as the date of Republic Day because it was on this day the Purna Swaraj declaration or Declaration of the Independence of India, was promulgated by the Indian National Congress on 26 January 1930, resolving the Congress and Indian nationalists to fight for Purna Swaraj of the British Empire.

What is the significance of Republic Day?

The Constitution of India is the longest written constitution in the world. After the adoption of the Constitution, the Government of India Act (1935) was replaced and India became a republic.

According to the Constitution of India, "It declares India to be a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic, and to ensure justice, equality and liberty to the citizens and to promote fraternity among them all."

On Republic Day, the President of India distributes the Padma Awards to the citizens of India every year. These are the second-highest civilian awards in India after Bharat Ratna. These awards are given in three categories, viz. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.
